Arrow‘s fifth season finale ended with Oliver facing the possible deaths of everyone he cares about, but even according to Stephen Amell there’s a lot more smiling in season six.

During a panel at the Heroes & Villains FanFest in New Jersey this weekend, Amell told the crowd that the notoriously angsty Oliver Queen is a lot more content this season.
“It’s a strange thing,” Amell said. “Oliver actually this season is a very contented individual. At least so far. Methinks that will probably change, based on just 120-some episodes of history. But I’ve seen three episodes and he’s smiling a lot more…. It’s nice as an actor to not be a stick in the mud all the time.”
Oliver being not just smiley but content is interesting considering that the fate of every single member of Team Arrow except for Dinah is up in the air following the explosions on Lian Yu last eason. In addition to the confirmation of Dinah’s survival, producers have also indicated that Manu Bennett’s Deathstroke and Katie Cassidy’s Black Siren make it into season six alive. A happier Oliver could be a hint that the hero might not be mourning the loss of his entire team.
Amell went even further and explained that the story for the upcoming season has let him be less present on set because the weight of carrying the story is more shared among other characters.
“If you follow me on social media, you might have noticed that I’ve had a little more time off than I normally do,” Amell said. “That’s just kind of where the story is this year [and] I’ve really enjoyed it.”
However, even with the confirmation of a few survivors producers have hinted that the mystery of who died on the island would last through all of season six so why Oliver is smiling — and how long his contentment lasts — is something fans will have to wait until the show returns to find out.
Arrow returns Thursday, October 12th on The CW.
