Duke Thomas’ New Costume Looks A Lot Like This Wolverine/Batman Mashup

Batman’s newest sidekick, Duke Thomas, got some major upgrades today, after his new superhero name and costume as part of the announcement for Batman and The Signal. The costume, in particular, has been getting quite a bit of attention from fans – with some noticing a very strong similarity to another noteworthy superhero.

If you look at many of the tweets in response to The Signal’s new costume, you’ll find jokes about its similarities to the Marvel Comics hero Wolverine. But, as some of us here at ComicBook.com have noticed, it looks pretty similar to another character altogether – Dark Claw.

For the uninitiated, Dark Claw is also known as Logan Wayne, a noteworthy character of the Amalgam Universe. As the name suggests, the imprint mashed up characteristics and superhero identities from both DC and Marvel Comics, with often hilarious results. Logan Wayne/Dark Claw was a mash-up of Batman and Wolverine, who appeared in five comics across the Amalgam universe.

The Signal and Dark Claw’s costumes do have different uses of color – with the latter falling way more in line with Batman’s predominantly-black outfit. But it’s hard to deny that the pair’s costumes do share a common silhouette, with similar shoulder padding and utility belts.

The easiest comparison can be made with the pair’s helmets, both of which are yellow with black accents over the eyes and the side of the face. While Dark Claw’s features a more exaggerated silhouette – as to be expected, as his comic appearances were drawn in the 90s – they definitely both give off a similar vibe.

Of course, this is easily just a strong coincidence, and much of Duke’s costume can easily be justified from his role as Gotham’s daytime protector. And according to Cully Hamner, who will be drawing Batman and The Signal, Duke’s costume will have a few updates when the comic actually hits stores. Still, the comparison between the two is pretty amusing – especially for eagle-eyed comics fans.
