The CW already had a lengthy superhero presence on its network, and that was before it picked up Supergirl from CBS.

CBS spoke about the show at their recent press breakfast (via Deadline), where CBS Corp. head Leslie Moonves touched on the perks of having two networks to play with, saying: “It’s great to own two networks. Supergirl fits better on the CW.”
Many assumed that if Supergirl didn’t complete its move to The CW, it would not be renewed at all, but according to Moonves, that wasn’t the case. He said: “If they didn’t go there, we would’ve probably taken it back.”
CBS had reservations about renewing the show due to its costly production and licensing fees. The show will now film in Vancouver instead of the pricey Los Angeles, and according to reports the license fee for the character is also being lowered. While the show’s numbers did go down from its opening episode, it still did quite well for CBS, averaging about 10 million viewers and holding the spot of #1 New Drama for the network. It also sported a 2.4 rating in the 18 – 49 demographic, which is nothing to sneeze at.
At the same breakfast meeting, Glenn Geller, President of CBS Entertainment spoke about the show’s prospects if no deal had been reached, and added: “It’s a win-win since we co-own the CW. We worked out a great deal. And who would say we wouldn’t have picked it up had it not gone to the CW.”
The good news is that Supergirl now has a home, and with her being on the same network as fellow shows like Arrow, Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, expect more crossovers to happen in the future.
