As the year of 2016 (thankfully) comes to a close, we’re able to looks back and measure the trends and statistics of the year gone by. One thing that has become an annual tabulation is Google’s top search terms for any given year. They are organized into all types of categories, but in the category of movies, there were two clear winners: Deadpool, and Suicide Squad.

Google confirmed that the two films topped the search terms for movies, with Deadpool snagging the top spot, and The Revenant coming in third. Those results won’t be all that surprising to fans that followed both Deadpool and Suicide Squad up to and through theatrical release.
All along, there was big fan response to any major announcements regarding either film. Trailer premieres, casting (Jared Leto’s Joker; Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn) and aftermath analysis all generated huge buzzes – as we here at Comicbook.com know first-hand! What is surprising is that a movie like The Revenant took the third slot; in a year where films like Batman v Superman and Doctor Strange also hit theaters, making considerable bank on their own.
It just goes to show: global movie marketplace is still surprising in what it propels to new heights of exposure. In a global range of tastes and preferences, it’s somewhat comforting to know that there’s no easily predictable consensus.
