The last episode certainly had its share of cliffhangers. This episode starts with Selina and Bruce running with a bag across a rooftop, a man chasing after them. When they get away, Bruce throws most of the bag of money out onto the ground below, which Selina chastises him for.
At GCPD, they're reacting to Jim Gordon escaping prison. Bullock convinces Captain Barnes – barely – that he doesn't know where Jim is. Then, he promptly goes to see Jim in an apartment building, where he has clues up all over the place for his frame job.
They figure out it "has to be" an active cop, someone smart, meticulous, and with access. Jim still refuses to run, he wants to clear his name. They decide to try to get a tape of the IA call that tipped IA off about Gordon in the first place.
Bullock uses his seductive wiles to keep the IA agent um… occupied, while Gordon uses her keys to sneak into IA's evidence storage. He finds his file, and luckily, the tape of the call (it's a reel-to-reel. Just awesome).
When Jim leaves, still disguised, he comes across a woman getting attacked, and stops the attackers – only to have a GCPD street cop hold him at gunpoint. He disarms the guy and runs.
Oswald's at his father's funeral and is distraught. His step-mother tells him he's 'not coming back to the house," and the other shoe drops. Oswald begs to be allowed to stay. She basically Cinderellas him, and says he can stay and be their servant. "We keep him close, and after a suitable amount of time goes by, he'll 'take his own life,'" she tells her kids.
Barbara has a group therapy session now that she's awake at Arkham, with Professor Strange. "I don't feel insane now… I feel sad." Strange's assistant doesn't buy it, thinks Babs is acting. Hugo has "absolutely no idea," he tells Peabody.
Bullock and Gordon meet up – there's now a $10,000 reward for anyone who helps Gordon be caught. The tape has a disguised voice. Gordon says he needs to find someone to help clean it up, and tells Bullock he's gotta go it alone from here on out. "I still have some friends I can ask for help," he says… and goes to Edward Nigma. Um, oops.
Yeah, Jim has come to Ed for help in getting the other audio off the tape. This… isn't going to end well for one of them.
Oswald cooked for the family, and step-monster doesn't like it. "brother" and "sister" start throwing the food at them. Oswald continues to laugh it off… for now. This isn't going to end well for them, either.
Ed and Jim talk about the case, and Ed starts to show his hand a little bit. "Psychopath seems a strong word," he says when Jim points to the guy that framed him beating Pickney to death. Jim is starting to suspect a bit. The tape's been cleaned, and he wants to listen with Ed. The "bird" noise was a cuckoo clock going off. After they listen to the tape, Jim pulls a gun. "I know it was you, Ed." Sure enough, the cuckoo clock goes off. Ed had an electric shock setup with the chair Jim was on, though, and shocks him. WHAT A SHOCKING DEVELOPMENT.
Ed drags Jim's body, arms tied tightly, down an alley toward his car. As he opens the trunk, though, Jim gets up and climbs into a building. Ed fires off a few rounds and shoots Jim in the leg. Nygma can't help but give hints and teases as he chases Jim, though, and reveals he did this because of "KK" aka Kristen Kringle.
Bruce and Selina are hiding out, and Bruce patched up her jacket – it's stitched kind of like Michele Pfeiffer's Catwoman costume. Cute. Gordon comes limping into their hide out, and says "I found the man who framed me. I need a f…" and passes out.
Oswald, looking for cherries, finds the bottle that his father was poisoned with. Grace nearly spots him with it. As he takes a sniff, he gags. He sees the dog and gets an idea. Pouring out some of the little remaining liquid, the dog slurps it up. Oh, this is just mean, Oswald.
The kids come in, and he looks at them with… Penguin face. They tell him to make dinner good, and he says, "Yes, I will." The dog dies, and Penguin laughs. Yup, he's back.
Bruce brings Gordon back to the mansion. He called Alfred, who came to help. Gordon wakes up and starts chatting with Alfred, first about Bruce's situation. Alfred and Jim move on to Jim's situation, and Alfred asks how he's going to get out of this.
Hugo Strange decides to release Barbara Kean "to the wild to observe her behavior. She's a beautiful experiment." Um, yeah, that's not going to end well (and that's the rule of comedy in threes, everyone!).
Jim details his suspicions with Ed Nygma to Alfred, Bruce, and Selina, and says he needs help – from Selina.
Selina goes into the GCPD and tells Barnes and Bullock that Jim came to her house, and when he left he said he knew where Penguin is, and was going to ask him where the body's buried. She says it all loud enough for Nygma to hear – and Ed freaks out a bit. "Chances of Gordon finding Penguin – 80 percent. Chances of Penguin telling Gordon – also 80 percent. That's a 60 percent chance of Gordon finding Kristen. That settles it."
Ed goes out to the forest where Ms. Kringle is buried, and starts to dig, not realizing that Jim has trailed him. Ed is actually fairly impressed that Jim set him up. "How did this happen to you? How did you become this?" Jim asks him. "You dummy. This is just who I am. You don't want to admit that there's a monster in all of us. You of all people should know that!" He asks him a riddle about death and points the gun at Jim – and Captain Barnes, Bullock, and a whole squad of officers draw on him. "We heard everything, Ed. Drop the gun." He drops it and runs, and they capture him.
Dinner time at the family mansion! Oswald serves step-mommy the roast she ordered, and he has a bit of a bite to his talk now. "You look different," she says. "You noticed!" He says they won't hear if she rings the bell for her children. He tells her he found the decanter she used to poison his father. "They won't come!" he said when she calls for Sasha and Charles again. "You thought they tasted the same – but Sasha – DEFINITELY more tender, in my opinion." Holy F*** that's brutal. He Scott Tennerman'ed her. So, after making her take bites of her own children (HOLY F****), he stabs her. Yeah, Penguin's definitely back.
GCPD, Barnes apologizes to Jim for that whole "throwing you in prison, almost getting you killed" thing. He says he owes him one, and Jim asks him to take it easy on Bullock. Jim says he's not coming back to work, "not yet, anyhow" and that he has something else he has to do. Barnes has Lee's number, and that she's working for an ME down south. Jim says he has to fully solve Bruce Wayne's parents murder before he can do anything. Barnes says if he calls Lee, he can have the Wayne files.
Bruce and Alfred have a chat in the mansion, and Bruce tells him it wasn't anything he did or didn't do. Alfred tells him that his father's computer is fixed, but he needs to choose: continue the work, or go back with her, but if he drags Selina into it, she could get hurt. Bruce tells Selina he can't go back with her. "Have a nice life, Bruce Wayne," she says. Pissed. She throws the jacket he fixed for her away.
Looks like Ed Nygma is getting checked into Gotham.
Penguin has a drink across from his dead step-mother. Woof.
Bruce and Alfred boot up the computer.
Jim calls Lee, but when she answers the phone, he can't bring himself to say anything to her… and when he hangs up, there's a knock on the door. It's Barbara. "Hi, Jim." And that's where we end!
