According to a new update from The Hollywood Reporter, Suicide Squad 2 is shifting its script and director options. The site broke news that Jaume Collet-Serra is the current frontrunner to direct the sequel, but THR stresses Mel Gibson has now backed away from the projects.

“Warners initially circled Mel Gibson to direct the project, but script delays pushed the production start and Gibson moved on,” the site reported.

As for the film’s script, Warner Bros. is starting over fresh. THR reports that Zak Penn penned a new script treatment for Suicide Squad 2. Fans will know the writer thanks to his work on projects like The Avengers and Ready Player One. A new script will now be built upon the treatment inked by Penn as Warner Bros. moves forward.

There is no telling how close Warner Bros. is to making a deal with Collet-Serra about the sequel, but it seems the studio is interested. The report says Warner Bros. has been eying the director since March, so there may have been scheduling issues in play which prevented Collet-Serra from signing on – that is, if he wants. If not, there are plenty of other directors out there who would like to take on the sequel.

As of late, Guy Ritchie is the latest director to signal his public interest in the DC Films sequel. The director told Variety. “I quite fancy doing Suicide Squad 2 because I felt like I could do a good job with it,” he said. “I can’t do it because I’m doing something else…but I felt like I could really do something with that.”
