Remember how everyone got excited in the Supergirl season 2 premiere, when a bystander quipped that he was "going back to Gotham?"
Yeah, Bruce Wayne is currently busy appearing on Gotham on FOX at the same time Supergirl airs, but there's basically nobody who doesn't want to know that the Man of Steel, the Dark Knight, and the rest of The CW's super-friends live in the same universe, so the little things can be exciting.
(Little things like graffiti, for instance.)
So when a little piece of dialogue comes out of Supergirl's mouth instead of an extra's, you can guarantee there's going to be interest there.
"My cousin worked with a vigilante once," she said tonight. "Tons of gadgets, lots of demons."
Wow...that sure sounds like Superman worked with Batman once. Unless, of course, that's meant to be a wink and a nod to an earlier incarnation of Guardian, but that seems likely given the fact that nobody has mentioned a previous one, and Winn was underwhelmed by the name in last week's episode.
Don't jump the gun thinking this means we'll see the Caped Crusader on The CW anytime soon, though: EPs have previously said that would be basically impossible. That said, a reference to Batman on a CW show is a good way of acknowledging that, yes, that corner of the DC Universe does exist on TV. Even if we never see it.
"I feel like we have our hands full with the crossover we're shooting right now," Supergirl executive producer Ali Adler recently said, referring to the Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow crossover event. "I think people will be satisfied with how much crossover they're getting this season." Adler added, "We have this beautiful history with DC, and I like that we get to borrow from this amazing, wonderful canon that we have."
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT; The Flash on Tuesdays at the same time; Arrow on Wednesdays and DC's Legends of Tomorrow on Thursdays. All four series air on The CW. The "Invasion!" crossover will air beginning November 28.
