It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…Supergirl in Riverdale?

Early this morning Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa shared a behind-the-scenes photo from season 2 of The CW series showing Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) just casually chilling at Pop’s with Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl in full Girl of Steel regalia. And if the photo itself wasn’t enough, Aguirre-Sacasa teased fans with a crossover, writing “Look who dropped in to #Riverdale for a visit! Worlds colliding!! Can a crossover be far behind??”

Could Supergirl really be heading to Riverdale? The show’s season finale did end with Archie and his dad in need of a hero, with Fred being shot by a masked gunman at Pop’s but it doesn’t seem likely that that Supergirl is going to swoop in and save the day. A poster for the upcoming season hints at dark times for Archie and friends, with the ominous word “DIE” on the Chock’lit Shoppe’s sign.
While Riverdale‘s Archie comics source material does have a history of interesting crossovers (including 2015’s mini-series Archie vs. Predator) the most likely reason behind Supergirl’s milkshake run is that both the teen soap opera and Supergirl film in Vancouver and Benoist is known to be a fan of the show.
Another possible reason for Supergirl to visit Riverdale? They could be shooting footage for a CW promo. The network released a promo for the new season of shows back in May, but they could be creating other promos to use closer to both Supergirl and Riverdale‘s returns this fall.
Supergirl premieres Monday, October 9th, at 8/7c. Riverdale follows on Wednesday, October 11th at 8/7c, both on The CW.
