In the closing moments of tonight’s Supergirl, it finally became clear what Superman’s role would be in next week’s season finale, and it’s a doozy.
Apparently brainwashed by Rhea, Superman will serve as a villain in at least part of next week’s episode, having charged into the scene tonight and battered Supergirl after destroying the massive cannon that was humanity’s best hope of destroying Rhea and the Daxamite mothership.
Introduced for the first time in full during the season 2 premiere, Superman appeared in the first two episodes of the season and now will appear in the finale, which seems to be hell-bent on becoming a reflection of that opening. Maggie Sawyer voiced the coincidence of she and Alex working together to protect the President in the two adventures, and the returns of Cat Grant and Superman, in addition to a theme of whether Supergirl and the Luthors can trust one another, all play in.
The turn — with the bright, sunny CW version of Superman taking a darker turn and fighting our heroine, might frustrate some who saw Tyler Hoechlin’s take as being a salve for the divisive big-screen version of the Man of Steel.
It’s also the second season in a row where Superman was psychically compromised; last season, he played no role in Supergirl‘s finale specifically because he was under the control of Indigo and Non’s psychic attack on Earth. In that one, he was just docile, not an active antagonist to Supergirl. This time around, she’s not so lucky.
The episode will seemingly culminate with a battle between Rhea and Supergirl, so it’s likely that the Superman battle will last about as long as last year’s finale battle with a Kryptonite-wearing Alex, which is to say just enough to get the audiences to the first commercial break and set up the bigger story.
