Wonder Woman has been the brightest beacon out of DC’s recent films, and part of that stems from the intentional decision to keep things from going too dark.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins spoke in a recent roundtable about her choices for the film, including handling tone. Other DCEU films have been much grittier in that respect, but Jenkins made a purposeful decision early on that you can have grit without sacrificing lightheartedness (via ScreenRant).

“I came in very definitively only wanting it to be [lighter], and so the choice of me, became the choice for that tone. So, probably. That probably was in conversation and that probably was a version and I sort of peripherally heard about,” Jenkins said. “But definitely, I always believed that Wonder Woman‘s not dark. So if ever there’s a place for a dark superhero, great, do it, but not Wonder Woman to me. That’s not a way I would want to make Wonder Woman.”

The film has been a monumental success for Warner Bros. in great part thanks to that vision, and the studio has already locked Jenkins in for the sequel. Hopes are high Justice League can build on that goodwill, but even if it doesn’t, Gadot will likely be another bright spot just like she was in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Jenkins was initially attached to a Thor film for Marvel, and some of those ideas did make it into Wonder Woman.

“I mean they’re very similar in a lot of ways,” said Jenkins. “It’s a lot of the same questions and a lot of the same struggles that I was interested in Thor’s story are here, although in that case it was the second movie so it would never have been as pure and as simple f an arc so I really think it was meant to be that I ended up doing this one, which I had always wanted to do anyway. And I got to do it in a kind of bigger and purer arc rather than putting it in that other story.”

Fans can still see Wonder Woman on the big screen, and even in IMAX this Friday.
