It's no secret people are loving Wonder Woman. The upcoming film is the best reviewed movie based on a DC Comics property since the iconic release of The Dark Knight.
This makes it confusing to hear that some folks might have looked at the film as though it needed something extra in order to make fans interested in its titular heroine. However, according to director Patty Jenkins, that was the case, despite her beloved hero already having several characteristics in common with the best known hero of all time: Superman.
"There's been a fear that you needed to go harder in some direction to make [Wonder Woman] interesting," Jenkins said. "And I was always confused by it. You could go out on Halloween, even now, 75 years later, and there's a good chunk of people dressed up as Wonder Woman. She's pretty simple. She is like the parallel of Superman. She's good, she means well, she's kind, she's loving."
"Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers… and her true destiny."
In fact, Jenkins had one particular Superman movie which inspired her efforts on Wonder Woman: the initial Richard Donner production.
"Superman I had been a favorite movie of mine, even when I was at Cooper Union, which is a very fine-arts school," Jenkins said. "People were painting a portrait of the career that I could have as an indie New York filmmaker. The only thing that stood in my way from staying in New York — because I loved New York and I wanted to stay — was something more that I wanted to do that was inspired by Superman. One day I would love to sing a song to the world, to bring something into the world that is beautiful in that sort of way."
Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and is written by Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).
The DCEU continues with Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
