We’ve been playing Injustice 2 for just about a month now, and it’s a very polished fighting game that both hardcore fans and comic book nuts have enjoyed equally, providing a wealth of heroes and villains to play as. And the roster continues to grow, with Red Hood just added this week, Sub-Zero (of Mortal Kombat fame) coming in July, and others joining the party in the months ahead.

That said, there are some characters that are easily favorable over others. For instance, Batman fans can’t get enough of The Dark Knight, while others have begun to adapt to the likes of Harley Quinn and Aquaman, as well as oddball favorites like Swamp Thing and Atrocitus.

So who’s the best of the best? There are quite a few to choose from, and their abilities are almost incomparable, depending on their different fighting styles. Still, I got into a bit of a brawl with the full cast, and came away pleased by the top five fighters available in Injustice 2. Of course, your choices may vary (“Where’s Wonder Woman?!”) , but I feel that these particular characters really bring something to the table.

5. Captain Cold

Captain Cold turned out to be a genuine surprise when NetherRealm announced him for the game. After all, most of his power comes from his suit and his ice-cold gun. But it turns out he’s got quite a few good moves in his arsenal, mainly with freezing attacks that work strongly both in terms of offense and defense. He also has a strong sense of movement, and while his combos may not be the greatest, his moves can still damage an enemy quite a bit. Plus, his super is just too much fun to watch as he surrounds his enemy, freezes them over, and then comes crashing down.

We can’t wait to see him get into a good fight with Sub-Zero next month!

4. Deadshot

It’s great to see that NetherRealm went with a more original design for Deadshot, rather than basing him off of Will Smith’s character in the Suicide Squad film. By hiding his face, you can’t really see what this character is up to with his attacks. What’s more, his array of firepower make him lethal both up close and from a distance, as he plows into enemies with great combos and grab attacks. Plus, his super is insane to watch, as he shoots his foe multiple times while flipping a shotgun in the air, only to catch it and pull a no-look shot to finish them off. Niiiiiice.

3. Batman

You can be anyone that you want to beโ€ฆunless you can be Batman. In that regard, always be Batman. The Caped Crusader turned out to be a wonderful fighter in the first Injustice, and he continues to carry on in the sequel, with many of his great abilities making a return, as well as his “wonderful toys.” On top of that, he can chain together combos like a pro, and can also add batarangs for secondary hits. He may require a bit of practice, but once you master him, his opponents simply don’t stand a chance.

2. Supergirl

Probably the most impressive of the new additions to the Injustice 2 roster, Supergirl actually handles better than her older brethren, Superman. Some of you may find that hard to believe, but she’s got a superb list of moves that come off like a dream (or a nightmare, depending if you’re playing as her or against her), and her super is incredibly powerful. On top of that, her Frost Breath really ties in to a number of combos, and serves as a great equalizer โ€“ even if you’re fighting against Superman. And, oh yeah, we totally dig her Power Girl costume. We know most of you do, too.

1. The Flash

A few of you may be questioning my choice of the Flash (or Reverse Flash, if you prefer) as my top pick on the Injustice chain, but the others can easily see why. His speedy moves are well integrated into his character, whether you’re using a spin dash or chaining together a combo of hits โ€“ which still hit the opponent after you’re done swinging your fists. I also like his damage level, which is just about right between his special moves and attacks. Finally, his super is insanely good, especially when you send a foe headbutting into an Egyptian pyramid, a T-Rex, and then themselves back in the normal time setting. What?!

BONUS: Darkseid

Even though he didn’t crack the top five, Darkseid still deserves an honorable mention, just because he’s so bad-ass. Seriously. He fires Omega Beams off like they’re going out of style, delivering hits to opponents both near and far. On top of that, his normal moves can do a sustainable amount of damage, and you can actually chain together a few good combos with him, to great effect. Sure, he’s a bit on the slow side, but once he lands his attacks, there’s no stronger player you’ll find on the roster. Look out.

Injustice 2 is available now for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
