Both Sony and Microsoft want to assure you they’re not out to destroy console gaming as you know it. For decades, consoles have been all about longevity and affordability, but this generation both Sony and Microsoft have bucked tradition, introducing the powered-up “half-step” PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X at a premium price. Microsoft recently made clear this is a one-time thing, and that they have no plans to release a new system every year, and now Sony has stepped up to say something similar.

In a recent interview with German website Golem, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s American president Shawn Layden definitively shot down the notion of PlayStation 4 Pro exclusive games and distanced Sony from a smartphone-style approach where users have to buy a new device every year or two. Pardon the slightly rough Google translation…
“The Playstation 4 Pro is the first time we’ve tried this kind of innovation within the life cycle of a console. The pro is really only about offering advantages like 4K resolutions and HMD for players who can and want to use that. Add to this a more stable framerate and larger hard disk space. But players who have a standard PS4 have no real disadvantages. Each of our games will continue to run on the classic PS4 and possibly slightly better on the Pro.”
Golem then asked whether a full-on PlayStation 5 would be Sony’s next big step, to which Layden replied…
“Yes. It will probably be some time.”
So, there you are – it seems Sony and Microsoft may have got upgrades out their systems for now. That said, there were rumors earlier this year that Sony may be prepping another PlayStation model for 2018. Honestly, I’m kind of hoping those reports don’t pan out and gamers get a bit of a hardware break next year.
