Many of you spent your Friday night celebrating a successful pre-order of the Super NES Classic Edition from Walmart. This celebration, I’m sorry to say, was premature. Today Walmart sent out emails to all of the customers who, up until this afternoon, believed that their pre-orders were safe and sound. The email read as follows:

“Thank you for your interest in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System โ€“ Classic Edition. As you are aware, this is a highly sought after console that will launch later this fall.

“Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the Super Nintendo Classic Edition was mistakenly made available last Friday evening ahead of the official release date. We, regrettably, will have to cancel this item on your order. We know that this is incredibly disappointing to you, and we’re truly sorry for this mistake.

“In regards to the cancellation of this item, if you paid by credit card, your card has not been charged. Any authorization holds placed on your account will automatically expire in accordance with the card issuer’s policy. If you paid through PayPal or with a gift card, your payment will be refunded when the order is cancelled.

“The official launch date for this item is 9/29, please check the product page on Walmart.com prior to that date for any updates.”

Will there be pre-orders this Friday?

You’ll notice that, despite multiple reports that pre-orders were actually meant to go live this Friday, there’s no mention in the article as to when (or even if) pre-orders would go live at all. There were reportedly multiple Walmartย customer reps who spoke to those who had their orders cancelled early on who said that the pre-orders were meant to go live this week, but no one knows if that’s true or not.ย

Pre-orders for the NES Classic Edition never occurred — not officially, anyway — so we’re beginning to wonder if it won’t be the same song and dance for the SNES Classic Edition. You may be camping out outside of your local game store or staying up late to refresh the Amazon listing like a mad man.

We feel your pain. We have needs. We have friends and family who will be wanting one of these. We’ll be right there with you, braving the lines full of nerds and late night F5 fests. If anything changes and we hear reports of another pre-order, we’ll let you know straight away.

Will you be doing whatever it takes to grab one?
