Bethesda Is Giving Away One of Its Best Games for Free

Bethesda is giving away one of its best games for free. And if this wasn’t enough, it is also giving away its follow-up for free as well. The former hails from 2008, while the latter comes from 2010. The pair of RPGs are 17 and 15 years old, respectively, and while both are a bit rough around the edges by the standards of 2025, both also still hold up, at least in most departments.

Of these two games, the more notable is Fallout 3. This is the 2008 release. The 2010 release is its follow-up, Fallout: New Vegas. The latter is going to be made free on October 16 as part of October’s Prime Gaming lineup. Meanwhile, the former will come a bit later, on October 23, but also via Prime Gaming. You will not only need an Amazon Prime subscription to redeem these offers, but a GOG account, as the codes are GOG codes. That said, each offer is for the premium version of each game. In the case of Fallout 3, this is the “Game of the Year Edition. In the case of Fallout: New Vegas, it is the “Ultimate Edition” being given away for free.

Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is a PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, and from 2008. It is the third major installment in the series, and the first from Bethesda after it acquired the rights to the franchise. With the release, Bethesda made a huge change, evolving the series from a 2D isometric turn-based game into a 3D game with real-time combat. And it was a good change. Fallout 3 would go on to be one of the year’s best-selling games and highest-reviewed games with a 93 on Metacritic. To this end, it is often cited as one of the best RPGs of all time.

Fallout New Vegas

What’s interesting about Fallout: New Vegas — which is also a PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 game — is not only that it’s a spin-off, but it’s made by a different developer: Obsidian Entertainment. While it didn’t sell as well, though, it still sold plenty of copies, and while it didn’t review as well, only landing at an 84 on Metacritic, it’s actually a favorite of many fans in the series, who like it even more than Fallout 3. And it’s extremely relevant right now with Season 2 of the Fallout TV show set to debut the game’s setting, New Vegas.

With Fallout 5 still many years away, Fallout fans will need to continue to play older games in the series to placate their Fallout fix. More modern installments, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 can do this job, but both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are better, and both are soon going to be free.
