Capcom PlayStation Exclusive Permanently Removed From Sale

A Capcom PlayStation exclusive game has been removed from sale, leaving gamers with no option to purchase the title. The newly delisted game hails from 2009, so this sudden delisting comes 16 years after its release, which makes it all the more bizarre. As is often the case with delistings, Capcom has not provided an explanation for the removal. Normally, it is a licensing issue, but 16 years is a very random amount of time for licensing to expire.

The Capcom game in question is Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes, a 2009 PSP exclusive. Now, this Capcom game is not available on the PS4 or PS5 PlayStation Store, only on the PSP and PS3 PlayStation Store. In other words, it was previously pretty inaccessible as it was only accessible using a PS3 console or a PSP. Naturally, not many have access to either in 2025.

Why Is This Capcom Game Being Removed?

Alongside relaying the news, Capcom — which is normally great about preserving its legacy — did provide a statement on the removal, but the statement is both brief and a nothingburger. All it notes is the shutdown date, August 29, and then it thanks fans for their “continued support.”

It is pretty common for delistings to have no information about why the game is being delisted, especially with Japanese companies. What’s odd here, though, is that neither of the two reasons most games are delisted for is relevant in this case. The most common reason for delistings is expired licensing, but there’s no obvious licensing with Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes, unless there was an expiration on the licensing of tech used for the game’s development. This would be odd, though.

Another common contributor to delistings is servers shutting down, leaving a game unplayable or partially unplayable. Sengoku Basara: Battle Heroes has no online elements, though, so this is not it.

The good news is this PSP game is available physically, but it’s not being sold as new anymore, so the only option is to hunt down a second-hand copy. This is obviously not ideal, but used copies are being sold on eBay at prices like $5 and $6. Given this news and likely the increase in demand, these prices could spike. And of course, over time, finding second-hand retail copies is going to get increasingly difficult, and consequently, more and more expensive.

About the Game

If you have never heard of this 2009 Capcom game, it is probably because it was never released outside of Japan. It is part of the Sengoku Basara series, which never caught on in the West but was a big deal in Japan between 2006, when it got its start, and 2016. Unfortunately, with console gaming on the decline in Japan, it has not survived in modernity, which is why it has been dormant for almost a decade.

As noted above, delistings are becoming increasingly common. For example, just this week a few classic games were removed completely from the Nintendo eShop. Meanwhile, next month, an Xbox exclusive is being removed from sale. While this is one of the odder delistings of the year, it is far from the first. This is the first listing delisting from Capcom in 2025, though.

All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think. Will you be picking up a retail copy of this PSP exclusive now that it’s gone from digital stores?
