Board games have gained increased popularity in recent years, as gamers like to lean into more analog experiences every now and again. And although tabletop RPGs have always belonged in a similar space, many popular brands are leaning even more into the board game associations. For instance, Wizards of the Coast recently released a heavily board game-inspired Heroes of the Borderlands starter set. Now, the publisher behind Pathfinder is gearing up for a massive board game based on its TTRPG.

Today, Paizo launched a crowdfunding campaign for Pathfinder Quest. This isn’t quite a starter set like D&D‘s Heroes of the Borderlands, but it’s certainly a similar concept. The co-op adventure board game is billed as “adventure in a box,” letting players build their characters and dive into a GM-free adventure with 12 different possible adventures. And clearly, Pathfinder fans were more than ready, because the game hit its initial funding goal on BackerKit in under 90 minutes.
Pathfinder Quest Delivers A Board Game Twist on the Iconic TTRPG
When I reviewed the wonderful Dungeons & Dragons starter set, I was impressed with how massive it is. Then I opened this BackerKit campaign and Paizo said, “Hold my mead.” The truly massive Pathfinder Quest project is chock full of bits and pieces to render the Pathfinder experience tangible in board game form, from cards and map tiles to full-on minis for characters and enemies. Though not technically a starter set, the board game looks poised to deliver a sweeping TTRPG campaign-like experience in board game form. And it’s paying homage to the first-ever published Pathfinder adventure by sharing its setting of Darkmoon Vale.
The game offers its own story, taking players to the town of Falcon’s Hollow where the dead roam free and threaten the living. Players will create characters and use the Adventure Book to progress through the story, leveling up, learning new spells, and progressing along the way. It will have a Standard and Deluxe Edition, with the Deluxe version only available to crowdfunding campaign supporters. But not to worry, even the Standard Edition is massive, with plans for inclusions like map tiles, enemy cards, tokens, character and enemy pawns, and much, much more.
Paizo set an initial goal of $75,000 for the project, and Pathfinder fans made it happen in under 90 minutes. As with any crowdfunding project, that means we’re on to the stretch goals. These include extra Quest Dice at $125K, more minis for the undead enemies at $150K, and an extra Oracle class at $200K. And that first stretch goal, at the time of this writing, is looking pretty realistic, as the campaign is sitting at over $120,500 and growing.

The Pathfinder Quest Standard Edition is set to retail at $119.99 MSRP. As a perk for early support, backers at the Apprentice Adventurer level get it for just $100 during the crowdfunding campaign. For the BackerKit exclusive Deluxe Edition, backers also get a discount, as well as that crowdfunder-only content that will not be available in stores. So, if this looks like a must-have item, you can save a bit by supporting the game early. The campaign, which launched on September 16th, will run until October 17th. After that time, we should have more details about the project timeline and when Pathfinder Quest will truly be a reality for TTRPG fans.
