A new Final Fantasy update is great news for hardcore fans of the old-school Final Fantasy games. In the modern era, Final Fantasy is in a great place thanks to the likes of the ongoing remake of Final Fantasy 7, the recent Final Fantasy 16, and even Final Fantasy Tactics is getting a remaster this month. A cornerstone of Final Fantasy’s success in the modern era, as evident just by the titles above, is mining the nostalgia of older games in the series. And Square Enix is open to doing this for even more niche installments in the long-running RPG series.

Of course, with the upcoming release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, there have been questions of whether or not Square Enix will bring back other older Final Fantasy SRPGs or even develop a new Final Fantasy Tactics game. Of course, Square Enix isn’t revealing its plans, but it has confirmed it is open to both possibilities.
Buy Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles If You Want More Tactics Games
When asked by Inverse whether or not Square Enix would bring back Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or its sequel, Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, Square Enix director Kazutoyo Maehiro said that if Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles does well, it opens the doors for these titles to get similar re-releases. Likewise, it also opens doors to sequels and new titles.
“If The Ivalice Chronicles can do well, thatโs good for the fans, they can enjoy it. But, at the same time, it shows the business viability of the strategy RPG genre,” said Maehiro. “So that could potentially open the door for doing something with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or A2, or maybe even sequels and new titles as well. I think I speak for everyone whoโs worked on the original Final Fantasy Tactics, and is working on The Ivalice Chronicles as well โ weโd really like to see that happen.โ
As you can see, not only does Maehiro confirm the possibility of seeing more Final Fantasy Tactics games — if there is enough market demand — but that it is something he and the team would like to do. And this last point can’t be emphasized enough. If Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles does well, it’s almost certainly going to be followed up by more. The question always with Square Enix is, what are its expectations, as the Japanese publisher is infamous for having unrealistic forecasting for its games, which always seem to come up short, no matter how well they do.
