Borderlands 4 might star a new slate of Vault Hunters, but that doesnโt mean fans wonโt see a few returning characters. One of those familiar faces is Claptrap, who has essentially become the mascot of the series. And while itโs fun to see the rust bucket back in action, heโs as annoying as ever. Thankfully, the developers at Gearbox are aware that some fans canโt stand Claptrap and have given us a way to turn him off permanently. Unless you know where to look, itโs an easy feature to miss, so hereโs a rundown of how to mute Claptrap in Borderlands 4.

Muting Claptrap in Borderlands 4

The nuisance that is Claptrap gets grating very quickly, but Borderlands 4 lets you turn off his dialogue completely with a handy in-game setting. To mute Claptrap, you’ll first need to head to the main settings menu. From there, click over to the “Audio” settings and then scroll to the “Advanced” setting.

Inside the Advanced Audio settings, you’ll find several options for tweaking your audio settings. Borderlands 4 gives you control over everything from the sound of your Hit Marker to the idle lines characters spout when you’re standing around. Many of these settings only allow you to trim the volume, meaning it’s not completely muted.
Thankfully, the final option in the Advanced Audio settings is labeled “Claptrap?” If you turn this setting to 0%, Claptrap will be muted entirely. You can, of course, simply lower his volume to deafen his screeching, but even if you mute him completely, he’ll still be available in-game. You can still pick up his side quests, you just won’t know what he’s saying unless you have subtitles turned on.
It would’ve been a good gag and in line with Borderlands’ trademark humor to have Claptrap break your containment and comment on the muting, but it’s a great addition from Gearbox. Now, your ears are saved from Claptrap’s incessant speech without losing anything too important. Claptrap might disagree, but thankfully, you won’t be able to hear his protests.
If you decide to turn Claptrap back on, you can tweak the audio settings to your heart’s content. That said, no one really needs to hear Claptrap speak. If anything, it’s funnier to know that he’s yapping away with no one there to hear him. Here’s hoping Gearbox adds a mission via a future Borderlands 4 DLC discussing the option. Giving Claptrap a heartfelt quest that digs into the pain caused by players muting him would certainly fit the Borderlands style of comedy.

Speaking of DLC, we don’t know too much about what’s coming down the pike. Gearbox has two story DLCs launching next year, with the first focusing on Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. It’s scheduled for early 2026, and we should learn much more at the Tokyo Game Show toward the end of September. We do know that both DLC packs are also adding a new Vault Hunter in addition to the story content.
