It seems that everyone’s trying to get a fun video game culture-based series worked on lately. YouTube Red recently unleashed the hilarious Good Game, taking a fun look at the esports side of things – and now, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are going after The Last Starfighter. Sort of.

The series is called Future Man, and Hulu debuted the first trailer for the series, which will be coming this November. And the reason we bring up the 80’s classic The Last Starfighter is because it kind of has a similar storyline. It even acknowledges it.
The series stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) as Josh Futterman, a young man who spends his days working as a janitor for a medical company. The only release he has from his day-to-day work is his video games, and he manages to conquer one particular title with ease. In fact, he earns the rank of “Savior”.
This gets the attention of a pair of officers from the future who recognize his skills and attempt to enlist him in fighting a dangerous enemy – yep, just like The Last Starfighter did. But there’s a lot of humorous twists and turns along the way to keep things interesting, like Keith David, a maniacal leader who will stop at nothing to get his way – even though it’s obvious he’s got a case of herpes.
The series was put together by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, who previously worked on the animated movie Sausage Party. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are on board as executive producers and directors. Eliza Coupe is also in the cast, joining Hutcherson and Coupe.
“It references and lives in the world of sci-fi–very happily and wholly–and pulls from these [movies] and TV shows from the last 20 to 25 years,” executive producer Ben Karlin said. “There’s a lot of James Cameron, Robert Zemekis, and Back to the Future. The show has a genuine love for those things while also trying to be a totally original story. So it just feels very much at home in this world.”
The series premieres on Hulu November 14th, and you can watch the trailer above. In the meantime, we can’t help but ask the question – would Keith David make a great president or what?! We’ve already seen what he can do in Rick and Morty, so he’s got our vote!
