With Hollow Knight: Silksong finally out in the world, many gamers wonder what long-awaited release will take up the mantle. For cozy gamers, it’s starting to feel like Witchbrook is returning to its mystery status. The game was announced in 2016. Then, after years of silence, it re-emerged with a Winter 2025 release window at a Nintendo Direct earlier this year. Since then, fans like me have been eagerly waiting for an official release date. Now, three Nintendo Direct showcases have passed us by, with not a whisper of news about Witchbrook, and Winter 2025 is starting to look like a mirage.

Given that our first update about Witchbrook after years of silence arrived during a Nintendo Direct, the release date dropping during one just makes sense. Those eager to experience a pixel art Hogwarts Legacy paradise have been keeping an eye out, only to be disappointed three times over. With the September Nintendo Direct out of the way, we still have no updates on when (or if) Witchbrook will actually release in 2025. There is still time, but it’s dwindling fast, especially if developer Chucklefish wants to capitalize on the holiday gift-giving season.
Updates on Witchbrook Have Slowed Down in Recent Months
When I last wrote about my concerns that Witchbrook is getting delayed, we still had the September Nintendo Direct on the horizon. I was holding out hope that the game’s release date would appear during the showcase, just like magic. But it didn’t. With so many years of silence between the game’s reveal and the new trailer we got back in March, it’s hard not to worry that the wait will just keep getting longer. For now, we don’t know for sure that the game is getting delayed. But the signs aren’t looking any better.
Chucklefish hasn’t gone entirely silent on us this time. The official @Witchbrook account on X has shared the occasional post as recently as September 1st. This latest update introduced fans to one of the game’s romance options, Cormac Fitzroy. Before that, we got a Dev Blog back on August 12th. Compared to the pace of updates and new posts from March to May, things have definitely slowed down a good bit. Whether this means they’re in the final push to get everything ready for a Winter 2025 launch or prepping to disappoint fans with a delay remains to be seen.
The Witchbrook account on X has 53.4K followers. On Steam, the game has racked up over 81K followers. So, it’s clear that I’m not alone in hoping that I’ll get to curl up with a magical new game this winter. But if that Witchbrook release date reveal didn’t drop during the Nintendo Direct like we hoped, when on earth might Chucklefish reveal it?
With No More Nintendo Directs, When Could Witchbrook Unveil Its Release Date?
As any disappointed witchy gamer would, I took to the r/Witchbrook Subreddit to see how my fellow fans were feeling about the (lack of) news. The first post I saw was, of course, lingering hopes from yesterday when we all thought we might finally have a release date to mark on our calendars. But as I scrolled, I saw some new theories emerge about potential next best chances for a release date reveal.
To be clear, it’s possible that Witchbrook won’t wait for a showcase to drop the news at all. With a big following on social media and Steam, the team could throw the news into the ether at any time. But often, big and long-awaited titles like this aim for a wider net with something like a Nintendo Direct. It’s fairly unlikely we’ll get another Direct in 2025, as the September showcase historically has been something of a year-end cap for Nintendo. It’s possible, but not probable. So a 2025 release date reveal at a Nintendo Direct looks less like a viable option for Witchbrook.

However, as one Redditor pointed out, October’s Steam Next Fest is still on the horizon. Though Witchbrook made its big reappearance with a Nintendo Switch 2 announcement, the game is also slated to release on Steam. And Wishlists for the PC platform are a primary call-to-action on the game’s official X account, as well. And announcing a witchy game release date at an October event? I can think of worse marketing ideas, for sure.
Indeed, many indie games lean into Steam Next Fest as a great marketing opportunity. The event is all about showcasing demos for upcoming games, and many developers pair their demos with release announcements, major updates, and more. So, we could potentially see more Witchbrook news the week of October 13th-20th, during Steam Next Fest. Might it also come along with news of a demo? A witch can only hope.
My gut, however, tells me we might be looking at a release date delay for this one. I continue to hope I’ll be proved wrong, and that one day a Witchbrook release date will appear. Winter 2025 could still happen, but it’s looking less likely by the day. For now, Witchbrook is still expected to release in Winter 2025 for PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
