Last month, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that the Fighter Pack 2 was coming to Injustice 2, featuring three very familiar faces – Black Manta, Hellboy and Mortal Kombat‘s Thunder God, Raiden. Well, we’ve already gotten Black Manta as a playable character, and now it sure looks like that Raiden is up next…with a little surprise in tow.

During tonight’s Pro Series Injustice 2 tournament on ESPN 2, NetherRealm premiered the first gameplay trailer for Raiden, along with a first look at a new premium skin, with a similar move set, but a lot of super-charged techniques. But what’s more, there’s a premiere skin being introduced with him — BLACK LIGHTNING!

As for the super technique, it basically enables Raiden or Black Lightning to trap their opponent in mid-air, teleport them to a Mortal Kombat-style stage, hit them with a couple of Superman charges, then fly high into the air and awaken the dragon from a Mortal Kombat logo to grab the opponent in their teeth and send them crashing down to Earth. A bit on the cheesy side? Sure. But still pretty damn amazing.

Raiden and the Black Lightning Premiere Skin (which unlocks with the Ultimate Edition of the game) will arrive sometime in October, which means Hellboy is on tap to arrive in November. So get ready, Injustice fans.

Raiden and Black Lightning Trailer

Raiden/Black Lightning looks to be a little bit more combo-centric than his old MK self, able to use an upcharge and close strikes to chain together numerous hits in one shot. That said, he does still have some old-school about him, including his “Superman” charge (which may take on a whole new meaning here if he uses it on the Man of Steel) that allows him to bum rush an opponent across the room for some damage.

He can also grab an opponent for a quick charge, set up a particle in mid-air to catch an enemy for additional hits, and a teleport (classic style) that can have him strike a foe from behind. He can also ensnare an opponent in what appears to be a “lightning rectangle”, which will trap them until Raiden/Black Lightning attacks. An invisible charge can kind of be used to propel an opponent into the air for additional hits as well.
