The Mario Kart franchise has been a fan favorite for years, and people are still enjoying it, with both Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe making the rounds on Nintendo Switch. But today, we found out about a gem of an item hidden away in one of the older entries of the series, Mario Kart Wii for the Nintendo Wii.

A YouTube user by the name of MrBeat35000vr (gotta love that name) has uncovered a hidden mode within the game that, for some reason, didn’t make it into the final release. But the remnants are there, and the user, who specializes in both streaming and hacking, has managed to post a video showcasing what could have been with a potential Mission Mode within the game.
If the mode sounds familiar, it’s because it was previously available in another Mario Kart game, Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS. “The menus for Mission Mode have no available text, but the game is trying to load them; they’ve simply been erased,” he explained in the above video. “Similarly, a massive file that would’ve contained mission parameters is not present, and without it, the mode can’t start, unless you simulate its existence, which is what I did.
“It attempts to load files out of the /Race/MissionRun folder on the disc, but that folder is empty, but that affects nothing since that folder would only have contained extra data (like where to place goombas or similar). As such, I was actually able to play a few games with the game in Misson state, and show off some of the game modes.”
Would the game have fared much better with the inclusion of a Mission Mode and more challenges to take on? Eh, it sold quite well in its own right, and has a good deal of content that’s still worth enjoying to this very day. Still, we can’t help but think what might have been, had Nintendo considered throwing it in.
This is a pretty good find, though, so enjoy the video above and then go play some Mario Kart DS for good measure.
Mario Kart Wii is available now for the Nintendo Wii, and can also be played on the Wii U.
