The Mighty Gunvolt series has developed quite a following since the arrival of the initial game on Nintendo 3DS a few years ago. Since then, we've already seen a handheld sequel, as well as a Steam release, both of which have brought plenty of old-school vibes to fans that enjoy challenging side-scrolling adventures, akin to the classic Mega Man games (but with a twist, of course).

Now, it appears that the series is ready to come roaring back to the scene, with an all new adventure that's not only coming to Nintendo's handheld, but also its newest console as well.

Inti Creates has announced that it's making Mighty Gunvolt Burst for the Nintendo Switch and 3DS, according to the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu.

The game will serve as a special edition of the original Gunvolt game, which originally came out for 3DS and Steam, as well as PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in Japan. Burst will introduce a number of new features, including the ability to strengthen your character through a growth system, as well as a "Burst Combo" system that enables you to land finishing blows on opponents. By doing this, you'll actually earn a nice little point bonus – and high scores can make a world of difference to some players out there.

Burst will feature the return of the powerful Gunvolt, as well as a surprise face from last year's Mighty No. 9, in the form of Beck. In addition, the Nintendo Switch version will also have HD rumble support, which is usually activated when using items.

The game is one of the newer titles that Inti Creates is currently working on, but it hasn't announced what its other one is yet. We'll likely find out soon enough, with the 5th of BitSummit happening in Tokyo this weekend. We'll let you know if it's based on a major franchise, or perhaps something new from the studio.

Mighty Gunvolt Burst doesn't have a release date yet, but it's likely to arrive sometime this year. We'll probably get more information this weekend during the BitSummit, so hang on tight for more details!
