A release on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 has given The Legend of Zelda fans hope. As you may know, in 2026, The Legend of Zelda series will celebrate 40 years since its inception in 1986, when a game of the same name was released on Family Computer Disk System in Japan, before coming to the NES and the West a year later. What spawned is one of the biggest and best franchises in gaming. Nintendo has yet to announce any special plans for the 40th anniversary of the series, but the expectation is that Nintendo has something up its sleeve based on how it’s operated in the past on major milestone anniversaries involving its biggest series.

Ahead of this, Nintendo has just released Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, remasters of the two classic Wii games. And while there are a couple of issues with the remasters, including some bizarre downgrades, by and large, they are a faithful and appreciable upgrade to the classics. And they have Nintendo fans excited about what could be coming for The Legend of Zelda next year. As you may know, there have been rumors of remasters of Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and The Wind Waker ever since the Skyward Sword HD was released on Nintendo Switch in 2021.
“Gives Me Hope”
“Galaxy 1+2 on Switch gives me hope for Zelda 40th Anniversary,” reads the top post on the Nintendo Switch 2 Reddit page right now. “Reworked textures and improved resolution on both games, one that was already re-released on Switch with 3D All Stars, mind you, and the other that was considered forgotten for years. All that sets a precedent that gives me hope for 3D Zelda games. Iโm old enough to know what it was like to get that one GameCube disk with four Zelda games included. I am now more confident than ever that we will see another Zelda collection in 2026. Until now I was thinking Wind Waker HD + Twilight Princess HD in 4K 60fpsโฆ but with the movie coming, Iโm now thinking it might just include a version of Ocarina of Time and Majoraโs Mask too.”
As noted, this is the top post on the Nintendo Switch 2 Reddit page right now, so this is a somewhat common sentiment among Nintendo fans. Meanwhile, many of the comments reinforce this. That said, as one comment points out, Nintendo hasn’t celebrated the series’ anniversary much since the 25th anniversary. Both the 30th and 35th anniversaries came and went with little of note, so there is no guarantee the 40th anniversary will deliver, especially because you would assume Nintendo has massive plans for the 50th anniversary.
What is working in favor of Nintendo going ambitious with the 40th anniversary is the upcoming movie. While Nintendo has never prioritized synergy as much as others in the space, it is going to want some type of premium Zelda product near the release of the movie. Not having this would be a massive missed opportunity.
All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. What do you want to see from the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda next year?
