Nintendo Switch Online Gets Free Super Mario Surprise for Nostalgic NES Fans

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 have a new Super Mario surprise perfect for nostalgic NES fans. It is hard to believe, but it has been 40 years since Nintendo debuted the first Super Mario game, and one of the best games of all time, Super Mario Bros. That’s right, 1985 and the NES were 40 years ago. The game itself has been available via Nintendo Switch Online for several years, but now NSO subscribers have an additional free surprise involving the game.

The new, free surprise comes the way of My Nintendo, where both Switch and Switch 2 users can grab the “Nintendo Classics – Super Mario Bros. desktop metal display” for 1,000 Platinum Points, as long as you have an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Unlike some NSO offers — like N64 games — this one does not require the Expansion Pack.

Nintendo Switch Online Exclusive

Like previous metal displays released by Nintendo, this new one is exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online and will only ever be available in this form. There are no plans for Nintendo to sell this or release this in any other fashion. As you can see via the image below, the display is metal on top of a sleek black acrylic base, where the “My Nintendo” logo is etched into it. In this case, it features the iconic design of the 1985 NES game.

The metal display, for those curious in redeeming the offer, has a protective film on both sides; however, this film can be removed. To do this, gently warm it with a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive, then carefully peel the film off. Nintendo does note this offer is only available as supplies last, but provides zero insight into how much supply there is. That said, those interested in this offer can redeem it here.

If you have a case of deja vu, it is because Nintendo released the same product, but for Super Mario Bros. 2, last month. It is unclear if it plans on doing this for every Super Mario game as part of its celebration of the series anniversary. What does appear to be happening, though, is that DS games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online next.
