Subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Game Pass Premium on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC are losing access to one of 2023’s best games. The game in question specifically boasts an 89 on Metacritic, which puts it just outside the top ten highest-rated games of the year, an impressive feat considering 2023 had some very critically acclaimed games like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Resident Evil 4.

More specifically, on October 15, Xbox Game Pass subscribers at the Ultimate and Premium tiers will lose access to Cocoon. Not only that, but they will lose access to their exclusive 20% discount when purchasing the game, which, in this case, lets subscribers pay $20 for the 2023 release rather than $25. And of course, once removed, there is no guarantee the game will ever return to the Microsoft subscription service. There are games that leave and come back. Some games leave, come back, leave, and then come back again. Some games will perpetually repeat this pattern, but many once removed don’t ever return.
About the Game
October 15 is a little over a week away, which isn’t a ton of time to play Cocoon before it leaves, if you wanted to. However, the good news is that the game is quite short, at five hours long. In other words, there is plenty of time between now and October 15 to play and beat Cocoon.
As for the game, for those unfamiliar with it, it is a puzzle adventure game developed by Geometric Interactive and published by Annapurna Interactive, the former of which debuted with the release. Meanwhile, if the game gives you a Limbo or Inside vibe, it is because it is designed by Jeppe Carlsen, who previously worked at Playdead, designing both of those games.
In the game, you play as an insect with the ability to jump between worlds, an ability you will have to master to unravel “a cosmic mystery.” Like Inside and Limbo, there isn’t much overt narrative in Cocoon, hence why the story synopsis is brief and vague. Also, like these games, the puzzles aren’t too difficult either. Rather, the priority is atmosphere and the player journey, and it excels in both of these areas, hence why Xbox Game Pass subscribers called it the “biggest surprise of the year” when it was added to the subscription at its launch two years ago.
If you are on Xbox Game Pass and you need something new to play, and you either already played Cocoon or it does not tickle your fancy, the good news is that there are plenty of other options. To this end, one of the best first-person shooters of all time was recently added. Meanwhile, there are many day-one Xbox Game Pass games coming between now and the end of the month.
