A PS2 horror game — one of the best PS2 horror games — is getting a new remake in 2026. The horror game in questions hails from 2003, and when it was released 22 years ago, it was only available on PS2. Eventually, the PlayStation exclusive also came to the original Xbox, but this came after the fact. Because of this, the game is synonymous with the PS2. This new remake though is going to be multi-platform, and it will be multi-platform from the moment it launches.

The horror game from yesteryear is Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, which is returning next year as Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake. There is currently no release date for this new remake, but developer Team Ninja and publisher Koei Tecmo claim it will release “early 2026.” For those that do not recognize the former, they are the Japanese studio behind the Nioh series, the Dead or Alive series, the modern Ninja Gaiden games, and most recently, PS5 exclusive Rise of Ronin. What they did not make was the original Fatal Frame II, which was rather made by Tecmo. How they ended up on this remake is a little unclear, as they have never worked on the series, don’t make horror games, and don’t typically do remakes.
Platforms and Trailer
As noted, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is scheduled to release sometime in early 2026, which is typically a window given for a game releasing sometime in the first three months of the year. Whenever exactly the survival-horror remake releases, it will be available via PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X when it does.
Original Game
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, the original game, is the second installment in the Fatal Frame series, which itself dates back to 2001. While the name Fatal Frame doesn’t carry a ton of weight in 2025, as it’s not survived the test of time like some of its survival-horror counterparts from this era, such as Resident Evil, hardcore horror fans need little introduction to it. And Crimson Butterfly is arguably the best Fatal Frame game, and one of the scariest games ever released. As for what is new in the remake, the aforementioned duo have not gone into great detail, but obviously the presentation and gameplay have been overhauled to modernity.
All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think or join the conversation now in the ComicBook Forum. Will you be revisiting this horror classic when it releases next year?
