PlayStation Plus users are enjoying an Xbox game made free as one of September’s free PlayStation Plus games. Unlike some PlayStation Plus free games, which are exclusive to specific tiers, this free Xbox game in question is available to all PS Plus subscribers across all three tiers: PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium. More than this, it is also available to both PS4 and PS5 users, as opposed to being limited to PS5 like many free PlayStation Plus games.

The free PlayStation Plus game in question is one of the best Xbox Game Studios’ releases of this generation: Psychonauts 2. Developed by Double Fine and released in 2021 as the sequel to 2005’s Psychonauts, one of the great games of its generation, Psychonauts 2 hit a 91 on Metacritic at release. Consequently, it is one of the highest-rated games of 2021, and it picked up many nominations at The Game Awards, including a Game of the Year nomination. It’s now four years old, but only now are some PlayStation fans getting to it because it was just made free with PlayStation Plus earlier this month.
“One of the Best Platformers I’ve Played in Years”
Now that the puzzle platformer is available for free with PlayStation Plus, PS4 and PS5 users are checking it out en masse, and enjoying it en masse. To this end, the top post on the PlayStation Plus Reddit page this week is a post dedicated to praising the title.
“The world and storyline in Psychonauts 2 are uniquely bizarre, yet there’s something magical about them that makes the game so enjoyable,” reads the post in question. “It’s fun, unpredictable, and keeps me wondering what comes next. It’s one of the best platformers I’ve played in years. I definitely recommend it.”
Of course, the popularity of the post suggests there is something to this sentiment, but the comments also reinforce the take as a take that is reflective of the broader PlayStation Plus community.
“It feels like a modern PS2 game in a good way,” reads the top comment on the post. A second comment adds: “This game is a masterpiece.”
A third comment drives the point home: “This is one of my favorite games. It’s super relaxing to play, looks great, and is a lot of fun. I like that the main character is voiced by the guy who voices Invader Zim.”
What to Expect
Those interested in taking advantage of this offer via PlayStation Plus, should know it is only available until October, when it, and more, will be removed and return to its normal price point of $59.99. If claimed in time, the Xbox game is free to keep, but it has to be claimed before this deadline. Once claimed, PlayStation Plus users can expect a game that ranges between 15 to 30 hours long, depending on playstyle and completion rate.
While the game has a predecessor and a spin-off prequel, you don’t need to play either to enjoy Psychonauts 2. It certainly enhances the experience, but the 2021 game has been made to be enjoyed whether or not you played a game that is 20 years old or not.
