Another day, another Red Dead Redemption 2 release date leak. Rather, we should say another supposed leak. Late last night someone brought our attention to a listing on Amazon Mexico which has Rockstar's highly-anticipated sequel launching on July 12. You can see the listing for yourself right here, but just in case it gets taken down, here's a screen-cap for our future selves:

red dead redemption

The price is about right once you convert pesos to US dollars, and the date doesn't look like a placeholder at first glance. Typically with placeholder dates, you see something like "December 31" if it's known that a game is supposed to release in a given year. If it's known that a game is supposed to release in a certain season, say spring 2018, then placeholder dates will typically offer up the very last day of the season. In this case, the last day of spring for 2018 would be June 21.

Rockstar originally positioned Red Dead Redemption 2 to launch this spring, so to see a July date is a little concerning. On the other hand, the fact that July 12 is neither the last day of spring, nor the first day of summer, could indicate that the date is legitimate. July also seems plausible since it's the month following E3 in June. It's easy to imagine Rockstar showcasing an exciting new Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer during a presentation and revealing a release date just weeks away.

On the other hand, eager fans have already opened up their calendars and observed that July 12 is a Thursday, which would be an atypical launch date. Usually we see games ship and launch on Tuesdays or Fridays, so to see a Thursday release date is a bit strange, and for many, it's the telltale sign that this release date is fake at worst, and misinformed at best.

While our gaze is set longingly ahead to E3, it's also worth keeping in mind that we may not have to wait that long to find out when we'll finally get to get our hands on this game. Rockstar will be part of a larger earnings call at the beginning of February, and you better believe that investors will want to know when they can look forward to Red Dead Redemption 2. Sometimes release dates are revealed during these meetings in order to instill confidence in investors, but we're not going to hold our breath. Take-Two has been wildly profitable recently, and doesn't need to seduce investors with a release date that it could otherwise reveal in a dope trailer.

The mystery continues. Stay tuned!
