Fans eager for Sony and Insomniac Games‘ new PS4-exclusive Spider-Man game haven’t got to see any new gameplay footage since E3 2017, but over this past week we were shown some new concept art. At the Disney D23 Expo, Insomniac revealed three pieces of art, and at this weekend’s Marvel Games San Diego Comic-Con panel, we got an additional piece.

All the Spider-Man art looks pretty cool, but does any of it mean anything? Was this art just released to give us a feel for the game’s mood, or was it actually used for the basis for playable stages and scenes? Thankfully, it’s the latter. According to Marvel Games creative director Bill Rosemann the team at Insomniac has let “nothing go to waste” and every piece of concept art revealed thus far has “led to some scene in the game.” Interesting! Maybe it’s time to reexamine this art?

We’ll start with the most recent piece, which shows Spider-Man and Mr. Negative brawling in a subway car. Rosemann specifically confirmed this is a playable scene, noting that there will be sections of the game where you’ll be hemmed in and have to rely on your wits, as the developers wanted to provide “unique experiences of what it’s like to be Spider-man in different situations.”

Next up, we have Spidey taking on Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin. This scene appears to take place in Fisk’s penthouse apartment, although I suppose it could be a museum or gallery given all the art on walls. Fisk isn’t really the “daring art heist” type though. Clearly quite a battle has been raging, with debris and bullet holes everywhere โ€“ could we be looking at an early boss fight?

Next up, we have another Mister Negative piece. He and his Inner Demons seem to have broken into someplace important โ€“ a bank? The New York Stock Exchange? Wherever they are, they’ve left some serious destruction in their wake, and we see the cops are on the scene. Clearly this is a tense situation โ€“ could this be more of a stealthy mission, where you have to sneak in and take out the baddies without setting off World War III?

Finally, we have Spider-Man’s filthy bedroom. Not sure if we’re going to see any huge action scenes here, but I’m sure you’ll at least be able to visit the location. Oh, and as we already reported, this concept art contains some interesting Easter eggs, including some hints as to who Peter Parker may be dating.

Spider-Man swings onto PS4 sometime within the first half of 2018.
