Square Enix SNES RPG Remake Just Stealth Released on Xbox Series X

A SNES, Square Enix RPG from 1993 just got stealth-released on Xbox Series X, 32 years after its original release. This is not the first time the classic RPG has been available on Xbox consoles, as it came to Xbox One in 2017 in remastered form, which means it’s been playable on Series X and Series S via backward compatibility, but now those on the current-gen Xbox console have a native version to play, and it’s not a remaster, but a remake.

Those after the original, extra nostalgic version of the 1993 RPG may find this new release a bit lacking because, as noted, it is the 2024 remake, which was released on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PS4 last year. Then it came to Nintendo Switch 2 this year, and now it’s completed the release cycle with an Xbox Series X release. This game is Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a 3D remake of the 2D RPG, Romancing SaGa 2.

About the Game

The new stealth release from Square Enix is going to set back Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S users $49.99, though there is a launch discount right now that slashes this price down to $34.99. Meanwhile, those interested but not enough to fork over this kind of money can download a free demo from the Microsoft Store, with the progress of the demo carrying over to the full game if it leaves an impression.

The fifth entry in the greater SaGa series and a full 3D remake of the original game, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven puts players in the shoes of the Emperor of Avalon, fending off legions of fiends led by the vengeful Seven Heroes ransacking their lands. One of the things that makes the game and series unique from many other RPGs is that it unfolds across successive generations across multiple characters.

For those who have ever wanted a taste of the SaGa series, this is not the best installment in the series in terms of quality, many would argue, but it is the most popular of the retro installments. To this end, it is a good entry point, despite the fact that it is the fifth release in the RPG series.

If this nostalgic Square Enix release doesn’t tickle the fancy, the good news is that there may be the return of another classic Square Enix game, Drakengard, announced very soon.

All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. What 1990s RPG series do you want to see return the most?
