Techland, the developers of the original Dead Island, have been riding high on the success of its first-person adventure Dying Light, which came out a few years ago. In fact, the company is so pleased by the success of the game that it has yet to announce work on a sequel, and instead wants to support the original with some more content – and free, to boot.

The company announced this plan last month at E3, but today clarified further details as to why it's making this move, whereas most companies would prefer to take the route of including new stuff in a sequel.

According to the game's producer, Tymon Smektala, the game continues to sell approximately over 500,000 active users per week – an unheard-of feat for a game that's almost three years old. That's a slight drop from the 700,000 active users the game initially saw upon release, but hardly that significant – especially when compared to other games.

As for what players can expect from the downloadable content, Techland is preparing twelve different content add-ons for the game over the next year, all of which will be free of charge. Smektala noted that it will add new enemies that will pose a greater threat, along with an abundance of in-game events, mysteries that require some solving, "and much, much more". But he didn't go into much detail beyond that.

To show appreciation for the game's community, Smektala noted that a small content drop with new enemies is set to arrive soon, and won't even be included as part of the baker's dozen of pieces of content coming to the game. The video above features some of this add-on content in action, so you can give it a better look. It's not much, but it does leave you hungry for more, especially if you're one of the many thousands enjoying the undead-bashing that takes place in Dying Light.

As far as what's next beyond that year of content, Techland has yet to make any decisions, but hopefully we'll hear more soon!

Dying Light is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
