Recently a mysterious western-themed image made the online rounds, leading many to speculate it was our first leaked Red Dead Redemption 2 screenshot. Turns out that wasn’t the case, as the image was actually from completely different title called Wild West Online, which sounds promising in its own right.

Coming from new indie studio 612 Games and publisher DJ2 Entertainment, Wild West Online will be a PvP MMO that lets you form gangs, uphold or break the law, explore a vast frontier, and engage in all sorts of other down-and-dirty Old West activities. So, basically, the game is Red Dead Redemption, except all the varmints and cutthroats you deal with will be controlled by real people. You wanna play that, don’t you?
When Wild West Online was first unveiled, 612 Games announced there were plans for a Kickstarter campaign, but interest in the game has been strong enough that they’ve been able to raise the additional money needed through traditional investors. That means Wild West Online will forego Kickstarter, but don’t worry, all the promised stretch goals are still coming, including the ability to play as female characters!
“The community’s response to Wild West Online is something we never imagined and thanks to it we’re able to fully develop a robust Western experience for PC. We’ve been fortunate enough to have our initial investors step up and provide additional funding to make the game we wanted, without having to raise money via crowdfunding. Westerns are lacking on PC so we can’t wait to release the game to the public.
Wild West Online will now release with its previous stretch goals in place at launch, including female characters, rich role-playing and social activities such as card games, and localization. After launch 612 Games will release additional content and gameplay features as part of several expansions to continue delivering the ultimate Wild West experience on PC.”
Well, yeee-haw! You could argue Wild West Online sidestepping Kickstarter is a red flag, but as long as they deliver all their promised stretch goals, I’m not that worried. Wild West Online will have a lot to contend with in Red Dead Redemption 2, but the game at least has the potential to be something special.
You can keep up with Wild West Online at the game’s website. A few new images have also been added to the gallery, below.
