Xbox Game Pass May Be Losing One of Its Best Horror Games Right Before Halloween

Xbox Game Pass is having a remarkable 2025. This is most apparent by the fact that the three highest-rated games of 2025 are currently available with the Microsoft subscription service, and have been since each of their respective launches. Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass hasn’t shed many noteworthy games this year. Most of the departures have been filler, older games, or games that are just not very consequential. That said, the subscription service is in danger of losing one of its best horror games right before Halloween.

More specifically, Xbox Game Pass subscribers planning to play Inscryption this Halloween may need to plan to play a different horror game, because the 2021 roguelike deck-builder may be leaving the XGP library sometime in October. Right now, there is no confirmation of this, but there is a good reason to believe it may happen.

Why It Might Be Leaving

Inscyrption was notably added to Xbox Game Pass back in October of 2024. This is relevant because the contracts for games added to Xbox Game Pass are often 12-month contracts or 24-month contracts. This isn’t always the case; sometimes they are longer, rarely are they shorter. Many Xbox Game Pass games that are added are typically available for one or two years, though contracts can obviously be renewed or renegotiated if the game proves a popular addition. Because Inscryption was added in October of last year, it could end up leaving next month. To this end, those who have been meaning to play it but for whatever reasons haven’t already, you may want to check it out sooner than later if you don’t want to be held hostage by the two-week heads-up Microsoft provides before games leave.

About the Game

Inscryption was developed by Daniel Mullin Games (Pony Island and The Hex) and published by Devolver Digital, and while it debuted in 2021, it didn’t come to Xbox consoles until 2023. It boasts an 87 on Metacritic, and picked up nominations for Best Independent Game and Best Sim/Strategy Game at The Game Awards. It has also been a fan favorite among PS Plus subscribers. Suffice to say, it is one of the best horror games of the 2020s, especially in the indie space.

In the deck-building rogue-like meets psychological horror game meets escape-room style puzzle game, you amass a deck of woodland creature cards as you unlock the secrets behind the walls of Leshy’s cabin, in a journey the developer describes as “unexpected and deeply disturbing.”
