There is a new zombie game that was just released this week on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. How well it is doing on console, we currently do not know, but the game has managed over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, signaling success. More specifically, the game has been out for two days and has already achieved a peak of 115,278 concurrent users on Steam. To put this number into context, this ranks the zombie game at #160 on the Most-Played Steam Games chart when filtering by all-time concurrent player peak. Consequently, this is one of the bigger Steam launches of 2025.

The zombie game in question is none other than Dying Light: The Beast, which was originally supposed to be DLC for Dying Light 2, but was spun out into its own spin-off game as the third release in the action-RPG meets survival-horror series. And so far, it appears to be a successful spin-off, blending the best parts of its predecessors. To this end, not only are many seemingly checking it out, but it boasts a solid 80 on Metacritic. That said, so far this is a bit below what Dying Light 2 achieved three years earlier. When it released, it posted a high of 274,983 players. This is, to an extent, to be expected as it’s a larger and more consquential release. So this is a pretty big drop off, but not a bad one when you consider this is not a sequel, but essentially a standalone expansion.
About the Game:
Like the Dying Light games before it, Dying Light: The Beast was made by Polish studio Techland. The spin-off picks up after the events of the Dying Light: The Following and stars the protagonist of the first game, Kyle Crane, who has escaped imprisonment and years of painful experimentation that added zombie DNA to him. Now he is part man, part zombie looking for revenge on the man responsible, the Baron. In his quest for revenge, he has to keep tame his inner beast all whilst surviving a zombie-infested Castor Woods.
As for what makes Dying Light: The Beast different than the mainline games, not much. This new zombie beast twist offers some new gameplay mechanics, but this is still very much a Dying Light game. Beyond this, the game is more linear and compact compared to the larger mainline installments as a result of being smaller in scope and smaller in budget. As for what will follow, it remains to be seen. Techland did recently have to cancel some upcoming games, which means it will probably shift focus to ol’ reliable, aka make Dying Light 3.
For those interested in buying Dying Light: The Beast, you will need to fork over $60. Meanwhile, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. Will you be picking this new release up or are you waiting for the third, proper installment in the series?
