Chloe Bennet’s character, like most on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has gone through several transformations. Starting out as the hacker-in-solitude Skye, she was later revealed to be named Daisy, became an accomplished agent and team player (and even field leader at times), and oh yeah, became a superpowered Inhuman in a major shake-up (pun intended). But at the end of season three, Daisy took off, leaving the team behind. With dark hair and a solo mission, it looks like she’s returning to the life that “Skye” lived.

“You’re right, you’re the first person to mention that,” Bennet told Comicbook.com at San Diego Comic-Con when we suggested the status quo reversion. “In terms of her being a loner, and independent and on her own, she’s very much Skye [again]. Skye was also very inquisitive and very curious, and very interested in superheroes. Now that she’s been through so much, I don’t want to say [she’s] jaded, but every person that she’s gotten close to has tried to kill her, or died, or become a Nazi. So she’s naturally feeling very tired about that and wants… She’s showing her love to the people she cares about by giving herself distance, because I think she feels like if she stays around them, she’ll hurt them.”

Her distance comes completely out of love, not any alienation after the seeds of mistrust were sewn by Hive throughout the second half of the season.

“It’s the exact opposite, it’s because she cares so much. Daisy, my favorite thing about playing her is that no matter what happens her level of empathy for other people is so strong that it probably comes across that she doesn’t care. She cares so much that she can’t even let herself get there, or she’d be in so much pain and put them in pain. She cares so much.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four debuts Tuesday, September 20 on ABC in its new, later timeslot.
