After weeks of buzz and critical praise, James Mangold‘s and Hugh Jackman‘s last Wolverine film has finally released in theaters worldwide to massive financial success.

A lot of people claimed that Logan was among the best superhero films of all time, and that it is definitely the best in the Wolverine trilogy of movies. And now it has the box office numbers to back up that claim.

Logan just surpassed X-Men Origins: Wolverine to become the most financially successful movie starring the Best There Is At What He Does, garnering $85.1 million so far.

That narrowly beats 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s opening box office haul of $85 million, and surpasses Mangold’s last film with Jackman, 2013’s The Wolverine, which made $53 million.

These results are especially surprising given that the last two films were PG-13 affairs. Logan‘s R rating literally restricts the audience with access to the film, but that doesn’t seem to have affected it much.

SOMEONE THINK OF THE CAMEOS: Stan Lee Thanks Ryan Reynolds

In fact, the buzz around R-rated superhero films will only grow now that Fox is two-for-two with Deadpool‘s massive opening.

These results aren’t particularly surprising given the reception the film had before it even released. Our own composite scores put it at 88.51, the second highest rating in our film database and only behind The Dark Knight.

It ranks higher in user ratings, where it has a 4.73/5 star ranking and is the #1 film based on votes from ComicBook.com’s readers.

Expect the box office haul to grow even as the film faces stiff competition over the coming weeks from Kong: Skull Island and the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake.
