If Ronan and Ego the Living Planet could not stop the Guardians of the Galaxy, then the box office had no chance. It’s been a few weeks since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 launched into theaters, and the much-anticipated sequel has not disappointed. The action-packed film reintroduce moviegoers to the MCU’s ragtag space squad, and Baby Groot was plenty adorable for everyone. Clearly, fans were willing to pony up for the feature since millions of attendees cashed in to see the movie. And, now, the sequel has finally overtaken its predecessor’s box office haul.

According to numbers from Box Office Mojo, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has raked in more cash domestically and internationally than the first movie. In the U.S., the sequel didn’t see a huge cash grab when compared to the original movie. It raked in $333.21 million compared to the first movie’s $333.18 million. However, it’s international pull was considerably higher. The sequel earned about $10 million more than the first movie did.
When the films’ worldwide grosses are compared, it’s easy to the difference between the two. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has officially earned $783,305,917 compared to the original movie’s cash grab of $773,328,629.
Right now, it doesn’t see likely that the sequel will budge over the $1 billion threshold. Unlike Fate of the Furious, the Marvel movie is expected to cut its theatrical run at about $800 million before its docks out of cinemas. Still, that doesn’t mean Marvel Studios isn’t pleased with the venture. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now the second highest-grossing sequel in the MCU next to Avengers: Age of Ultron at the worldwide box office.
If Marvel plays its cards right, then Guardians of the Galaxy 3 may very well break the franchises’s $1 billion mark for the first time. Star-Lord and his gang of space superheroes should get ready for a raise if that were to happen.

The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
