The just-over-two-minutes-long teaser trailer for Black Panther, based on the popular Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, racked up 89 million views within its first 24 hours of release.
The teaser trailer first aired during the first quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals on ABC, where it racked up 19 million of the 89 million views from live viewers, before being release online across various social media platforms.
What’s most impressive about the 89 million number is the fact that this trailer did not rely on any of the popularity provided by the well-known Avengers characters. Where titles like Ant-Man used the familiar face of the Falcon and Spider-Man: Homecoming heavily features Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Black Panther elected to go the route of exploring Wakanda on a completely Avenger-free adventure. The only place the titular Wakandan king has appeared cinematically prior to the trailer was in Captain America: Civil War, which certainly provided no shortage of eyeballs for the character’s introduction.
The record for most views within 24 hours was broken earlier this year when Thor: Ragnarok dropped its first look unexpectedly and racked up 136 million views in the first day. Still, Black Panther is already sitting at number three all time just a few days after being released, in the good company of Captain America: Civil War which is also parked at 61 million views. Both are ahead of the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which climbed to 55 million and 52 million, respectively.
The film was also a hit on Twitter, becoming the most talked about topic on the social media platform following the teaser trailer’s release.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecoming lands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
