The latest film from Marvel Studios answered some pivotal questions fans have been asking since Avengers: Age of Ultron released over two years ago.

And while Thor: Ragnarok revealed what Thor and the Hulk have been up to after their epic battle against the Tony Stark's rogue A.I., we also found out why one character has been absent since the events of Thor: The Dark World.

Natalie Portman's character Jane Foster hasn't been featured in a Marvel Studios movie since the second Thor movie, and she might not be a part in the franchise in the distant future either. The new film explains this very simply in a scene where Loki and Thor arrive on Earth looking for Odin. Thor is asked to take a selfie by a few fans while Loki looks on, and after posing for the picture one of the fans apologizes.

"I'm sorry Jane dumped you," she says while walking away.

Thor tries to play it off to his brother cooly. He says that she didn't dump him, but rather it was a "mutual dumping." The subtext makes it very clear that there are still some raw feelings there, and Thor isn't quite over his ex-girlfriend but still has too much hubris to admit that she left him.

It was clear that Portman was done with Marvel Studios even before filming got underway, as the actor indicated last summer in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

"As far as I know, I'm done," said Portman, adding that she's not sure if she'll be asked back for "Avengers 7" or something else in the future.

Though it might seem unlikely now, Portman appearing in the future isn't out of the realm of possibility. The current storyline in Marvel's Thor comics features a cancer-struck Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir as the Goddess of Thunder.

The former Thor has sacrificed his name and now goes by Odinson, but as that run has gone on for a few years now under writer Jason Aaron, it seems like the mantle is about to be shifted back.

So could Portman appear in the future as the new Thor? It's possible. But given the explanation in Thor: Ragnarok, fans should expect an awkward reunion between Jane Foster and her ex-boyfriend if it does go down.

Thor: Ragnarok is in theaters now.
