Marvel President Addresses Future Of Netflix Shows In Light Of Disney-Branded Streaming Service

With Disney entering the streaming service market, fans are unsure where that leaves the current crop of Marvel's Netflix shows, which are still in development.

Marvel has had a stellar run when it comes to their Netflix universe, with shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Defenders, and most recently The Punisher airing to positive reviews. With Disney's service approaching in the years to come, President of Marvel Entertainment Dan Buckley addressed concerns about those going away (via Bloomberg).

"We obviously want the Marvel Television series currently on Netflix to have a long and lauded run," Buckley said, adding that new projects, however, would seek out "networks and platforms that are the best fit for that content, including the Disney-branded streaming service."

Disney's streaming service is looked at as a potential juggernaut thanks to its extensive catalog of IP, but a key thing to remember is that Disney still wants to make money from other avenues, and it will likely still put plenty of projects at other networks.

Sure some of them will be exclusive to the new service, but it is not likely to remove Daredevil and stick it on the streaming service if a deal with Netflix can be worked out. That show already has a following on Netflix's platform, and while having it on the Disney service would be a great short-term boost, it would likely lose a share of viewers thanks to Netflix's already extensive user base.

Of course, Disney could just do it anyway, but it seems Buckley is leaving the door open for shows on Netflix, Hulu, and other services that it could work with in the future.

While there are unknown details, it is smart for Disney to get into the streaming service game. It has so much IP in its catalog that it would be hard to turn away one service that holds Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars properties. Few other studios have that kind of dense catalog, and it was only a matter of time before Disney decided to utilize it in this way.

As for the Marvel Netflix shows, the next one up to plate is Jessica Jones season 2, which is likely to be followed by Daredevil season 3.

The Disney series is expected to be up and running in 2019, while Jessica Jones hits in March.
