James Gunn Acknowledges Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Continuity Error

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 tearing through box offices across the globe, the director has begun answering some spoilerific questions about the film's plot and production.

The latest Marvel Studios movie packed in what some are saying is the best Stan Lee cameo yet—one that could tie every single Marvel movie (not just the MCU stuff) together while positioning Lee as a cosmic being unbound by the rules of space, time, or the multiverse.

Lee pops up when Rocket, Groot, Yondu, and Kraglin are making warp jumps through the galaxy so that they can reach Ego's planet in time to save their friends, and they happen to pass by a group of Watchers. The scene stays with them as the Guardians pass on, showing Lee telling the Watchers about his different cameos in the various films, including in Captain America: Civil War when he was a FedEx driver.

But how is this possible if Guardians of the Galaxy takes place in 2014, just mere months after the original film, and Civil War takes place further into the future?

Gunn addressed the continuity during a question-and-answer session with fans on Facebook Live where he admitted to the error.

"Yes, I know, I've made a mistake," Gunn admitted. "People have written and asked me and I'll own up to my mistake because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 theoretically happens in 2014 which is before Infinity War."

He probably meant Civil War.

"And Stan Lee in the movie says, 'that time I was a FedEx guy,' which is what he is in Civil War," Gunn said. "And I screwed up, I wasn't thinking, that's all that is. But I'm going to say that probably Stan Lee used the guise of a FedEx guy more than one time… It's a mistake, but it can be easily explained away."

The director added that while filming this scene they almost added a link to the Deadpool movie that didn't make the cut. So the Marvel Universe almost got much, much bigger.
