James Gunn Reveals Why He Changed Star-Lord's Father

Now that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters and making a ton of money for Marvel Studios, director James Gunn has been answering more questions about the film's story and production.

The filmmaker recently took to Facebook Live for a question-and-answer session with the fans in which he discussed why he made certain changes from Marvel Comics canon, including the decision to change Star-Lord's parentage.

Gunn was asked why he made Ego the Living Planet to be Peter Quill's father instead of J'son of Spartax, the king of a vast planetary system in the cosmos.

"I do not like J'son," Gunn said bluntly, "I just don't like the character very much. I also thought it was too much like a Star Wars thing because of the royalty and all of that."

The director said he already had a plan for Quill's father before the first film and knew he would be a "Celestial being who was up to absolutely no good."

Gunn said the basics were always there before he even knew it would be Ego, that the character could appear as a beam of light, and that he had tricked Yondu into delivering children to him. When Yondu finds out, he decides to keep Peter.

"It wasn't until a little bit later that I thought, 'what Marvel character could fit those requirements and be that character?' and to me, it was Ego," Gunn said.

The director called it an "out-there, crazy, interesting idea than just being some sort of king that wears what looks like a Navy uniform."

Ouch. Gunn did apologize for being negative, but his words are pretty clear. He has no interest in using J'son of Spartax, so don't expect to see the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so long as Gunn is helming the space-faring adventures.
