The final arc of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has dove headfirst into the parallel reality of the Framework. After dealing with the supernatural threat of the Darkhold with Ghost Rider as well as the technologically advanced Life Model Decoys like Aida, those two aspects combined to create a whole new world for the Agents to deal with.

And though Daisy, Simmons, and Coulson are the only people who know their new surroundings are artificial, they’re having a rough time adjusting with the new normal. Especially given that Hydra is in control, Fitz is evil, and Grant Ward isโฆ well, alive.
ComicBook recently caught up with the man who brings Ward to life, the returning Brett Dalton, to talk about all of the changes to his character as he exists within the fake reality created by the Framework.
Dalton gave some interesting answers, and also provided some interesting answers elsewhere. One of the major issues with Daisy’s emergence in the Framework has to do with her memory of past events and her knowledge of who Grant Ward really is.
And then Daisy emerges in this new life with him sharing the same bed, working with him, and him knowing her biggest secret. But this Ward seems to have chosen love over his jobโa direction that was hinted at in the early seasons.
Dalton noted that interesting dynamic between the two characters, detailing their background from his perspective and how he sees the relationship. As he said to CBR:
Well, I think that we’re seeing someone who has real affection for Daisy, or I guess her name is Skyeโฆ In this world, her name is Skye, at least to Grant Ward. Where we pick up in the Framework is she had just asked him to move in, so this is after years of them being together and even getting permission for two agents to cohabitate, so they’ve even done all of the paperwork. So this is something I think that’s pretty serious. It doesn’t seem like Ward is someone who trusts other people easily, but it does seem like โ prior to this โ they were a pretty healthy, functional couple.
They went to work together and, yeah, they hadn’t moved in with each other up until now, but at least they were in a discussion about it. Maybe Grant Ward has reservations about it, but they were quite serious and quite attached. So it has all the signs of it being a seriously and relatively healthy relationship. It’s not until she wakes up all of a sudden and I’m like, “What happened to my girlfriend?” She was totally cool yesterday! Yeah, it will have an effect.
It’s interesting to see that the villainous streak might still exist in there, but that he’s set it aside for the woman he loves. And as we’ve seen, Daisy cannot easily forget what Ward has done, but she’s willing to deal with him at this point for the good of the rest of her team.
Whether Ward will continue to exist, be it as a LMD or as the result of magic via the Darkhold, remains to be seen, but the character has definitely injected tome life into the show.
Marvel‘s Agents of SHIELD airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
