Fans of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD may have noticed a slight bend towards things political in the second half of the season. As the agents explored and tried to survive in a world run by a fascist, Hydra state, the storyline sprinkled in some phrases that may sound familiar to those following the news including, “Nevertheless, she persisted” and “alternative facts.”

Despite what seems to be some borrowing from the headlines, the show’s producers say that their dystopian vision for the Framework was in the works well before the 2016 election.

“Honestly, when we started the year, which was way back you in June, we knew that in the Framework Hydra won and so we knew we were going to build a fascist Framework where SHIELD would have lost,” Agents of SHIELD executive producer Jeff Bell explains to ComicBook.com. “That’s just the fun of ‘What if the bad guys won?’ In The Man in the High Castle, it’s, ‘What if the Nazis won?’

“In terms of certain lines or sentences, I think those things are true in lots of different situations,” Bell continued. “The fact that some of our writers leaned into some of those felt organic to the Hydra story we were telling. I guess I’ll leave it at that.”

“If you’re building a world based on fear there are certain key things you do,” adds executive producer Jed Whedon. “We used inspiration from things we saw around us, as we always do.”

Ultimately, the SHIELD team escaped the Framework, but they still have to face AIDA in tonight’s season finale, “World’s End.”

In “World’s End,” with the surprising emergence of Ghost Rider, Coulson and the team attempt to stop Aida from ending the world.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’s fourth season finale, “World’s End,” airs Tuesday, May 16 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns with a vengeance for the fourth exciting season in an all new time period, Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they’ve ever faced โ€“ an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell.
