If you have been keeping up Iron Man, then you know the hero has had a rough time as of late. Tony Stark had a public falling out with his teammates in Captain America: Civil War, and things will only get more different once Thanos arrives to Earth in Avengers: Infinity War. With the Mad Titan gunning to destroy the galaxy, Iron Man may be due for a change of heart when it comes to his superhero lifestyle – literally.
Earlier today, Robert Downey Jr. shared a new set photo of himself from Avengers: Infinity War. The image shows the actor standing next to Gwyneth Paltrow and Jon Favreau, but it is Downey’s shirt that is grabbing attention.
The actor is shown wearing a jacket tied around his neck, but the choice may not have been made for fashion. The scarf appears to cover up a new type of arc reactor that’s centered in Tony’s chest, and it looks different from the hero’s previous installments.
The new arc reactor appears to be bigger than Tony’s older models, and it seems less triangular. The new piece of technology is bulkier than anything Iron Man has used before, and it seems like Tony’s undershirt has a cut-out which helps support the piece.
Earlier this year, fans were first teased about the return of Iron Man’s arc reactors with different set photo. A picture of Downey on the set of Avengers: Infinity War was posted which saw him eating with co-stars like Benedict Cumberbatch. The photo saw Downey leaning back in his chair, exposing a large hole cut into his costume’s chest. The cut-out left fans puzzled as Tony got his arc reactor surgically removed at the end of Iron Man 3, but there are some explanations for the tech’s revival.
Aside from Dormammu, there’s never been a greater threat in the MCU than Thanos. The Mad Titan will stop at nothing to wield the Infinity Gauntlet, and his formidable power may force Tony to power-up his Iron Man suits. If Iron Man hopes to fight in space and push his suits to their absolute limit, Tony may need to reinstall his arc reactor in order to take Thanos down. But, for whatever reason, it looks like Tony will be turning himself into a weapon once more.
Hopefully, he manages to avoid get hit with any shrapnel this time around.
Avengers: Infinity War premieres in theaters May 4, 2018. Avengers 4 is slated to hit theaters a year later in 2019.
As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
