The Purple Man (real name Zebediah Killgrave) has been making the city his homicidal playground recently thanks to the capturing of the Purple Children. The Purple Children are Killgrave’s various offspring, and all possess a portion of his mind controlling abilities. When gathered together they become even more potent, so Killgrave has been attempting to collect all of them to power his Psycho-Prism to control the masses. Daredevil intervened the first time, but then Killgrave took control of him and sent him out hurt the woman he loves.
Daredevil was able to take down Killgrave, but after he reached out to see if Kristen was okay, the Purple Children decided to do their best to help him after all the times Daredevil’s helped them. They decided to use their combined might along with Killgraves (he was out of it but conscious) to power the Psycho-Prism and alter the minds of the masses, issuing a command of “You don’t know Daredevil’s real name. Anything you see or hear or learn that tells you who Daredevil is, you won’t see or hear or learn unless Daredevil wants you to. Daredevil does good things. Forget anything else.”
Daredevil realizes what they’ve done when he goes home to check on Kristen in costume, and she doesn’t know he’s really Matt Murdock. Remembering what the Purple Man made him do to her and others he cares about, he decides not to tell her, but he does tell Foggy. Foggy initially doesn’t know his identity either, but once he pulls off his mask it all comes flooding back to him. Who knows his identity is now firmly back in Matt’s control, but the Purple Man does still know who he really is. You can view the spoiler images in the gallery.
