The Marvel Cinematic Universe sometimes receives a touch of criticism for not killing enough characters. However, the now over a dozen entries into the franchise have killed more of the good guys than some fans may realize.
Following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the list has only grown longer as the living heroes bid a touching farewell to yet another beloved ally.
Let’s take a look at a complete list of fallen heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Peggy Carter
Peggy Carter may still pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through flashbacks involving the Stark parents or Hank Pym but the character ceases to live in the current timeline.
In Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers learned that his love first introduced inย Captain America: The First Avenger had passed away. She did not die a horrifying death which many heroes do. Instead, she passed away peacefully in her bed, having lived a long, heroic, and prosperous life.
Peggy Carter’s adventures have been showcased in Ant-Man and her self-titled TV series Agent Carter and whether or not we will see her again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently unknown but seems likely given the exploration of Janet van Dyne’s story and Hank Pym’s history coming in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Quicksilver
Quicksilver’s death sparked a bit of anger for many fans.
The character was introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It was the same film which would kill him.ย
Pietroย Maximoff, brother of Wanda (a.k.a. Scarlet Witch), sacrificed himself to save Hawkeye and the little boy he was making an effort to save. In doing so, he was shot several times.
Many fans reserve hope that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will reprise the role of Quicksilver somewhere along the way in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but unless time travel comes into play in Avengers: Infinity War, it doesn’t look like we will be seeing him any time soon.
Groot
Although he returned as Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Grootย fans met in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy is very much dead.ย
Grootย sacrificed himself when he formed a cocoon around the Guardians of the Galaxy who were aboard the crashing Dark Aster ship. He did so knowing this would be the end of the road and told Rocket, “We are Groot.”
The Baby Grootย who returned with the now auto-tuned high pitched voice of Vin Diesel in Guardians of the Galaxyย Vol. 2 has no memory of the original film and is entirely new being, meaning the original Grootย is still dead.ย
Yondu
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 saw the realization that the man who actually raised Peter Quill was more hisย father than Ego the Living Planet would ever be. Then, it killed him.
Following a joke from Drax early in the film which saw the Destroyer questioning Quill, thinkingย Yondu was his father all along. As Yonduย rescued Quill from the quickly imploding remains of Ego, the no longer living planet, he equipped Quill with the only space suit available in an effort to save his life.ย
Yonduย died in space before they could make it to their ship and the Colors of Ogord shined over his funeral.ย
The Ancient One
The woman responsible for mentoring Doctor Strange and sculpting him into the hero he became for his self-titled debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to end did not make it to the end of the movie.
The Ancient One was trying to take on Kaeciliusย when was stabbed and ultimately fell to herย demise.
The sendoffย for the Ancient One was one of the more intimate and touching farewells. She slowed time as her soul left her body and enjoyed watching rain drops and lightning one last time before departing the land of the living for good.
Parents
Many of the parents of our heroes have suffered tragic deaths.
Thor’s mother became a victim of her heroic family’s battles when Asgardย was invaded in Thor: The Dark World. Algrimย (or Kurse), Malekeith’sย grunt, killed her on her home turf before Thor managed to save her.
Back on Earth, it’s the Stark’s who win the award for worst deaths. The Winter Soldier slaughtered both of Tony’s parents, Howard and Martha, as they drove with super soldier serum in their trunk. It was the Hydra mind control which forced Buckyย Barnes to commit such an act and a major factor for Captain America: Civil War‘sย third act.
The Fakeouts
While the characters written on this list so far have proven to be very much dead and staying that way, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faked audiences out with major deaths in the past.
The most notable death which was undone is Phil Coulson. The character became a fan-favorite during his time in Phase 1 which culminated in his death by the hands of Loki in 2012’s The Avengers. Before that year came to an end, though, Coulsonย was appearing on Agents of SHIELD where it would be revealed a secret project in Tahiti brought him back to life.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury was believed dead by characters and audiences alike. After taking a sniper round through his body, his heart stopped on an operating table. However, it was all a ploy to make Hydra operatives think him dead before he returned later in the film and in Avengers: Age of Ultron.ย
