Iron Fist plays a big part in The Defenders, but for all of his involvement, some pieces of the character are still being sorted out on the fly.

Spoilers coming for The Defenders, so you’ve been warned.
In The Defenders, the remains of a dragon are found in the pit seen in Daredevil. Some might have assumed it was tied to Shou-Lao, due to the disappearance of K’un Lun. Executive producer and showrunner Marco Ramirez shot that down rather quickly (via EW).
“That’s a question for the Iron Fist showrunner, not me,” Ramirez said. “Honestly, I don’t know where they’re going with that.”
That stems from pieces of Iron Fist‘s core history being developed as the shows go along. Ramirez compares it to another TV favorite, Lost, in that sometimes things are retrofitted after the fact.
“It’s like, we knew in season 1 of Daredevil that Nobu wanted a specific building in New York City, and that was why it was important for the Hand to get their hands on this one building,” Ramirez said, “and then in season 2, we revealed that they weren’t building up, they were building down. What they were digging toward we didn’t know, so when we started on Defenders, we knew it would be Defenders versus the Hand, and we didn’t know what they were digging for, and we could come up with anything, you know? It’s kind of a fun thing that TV writers do. Like on Lost, the whole season is about the Hatch, but what’s in the Hatch? We’ll figure that out next season! That’s how these things happen.”
When their dragon skeleton was compared to Lost’s Desmond, Ramirez responded with a laugh, adding, “Sure.”
